A central part of our motivation for creating Zone 7 has been our strong passion for health equity and accessibility. As we touched upon in our welcome post, there are so many aspects of our lives and society that hinge on health, as well as countless factors that influence it. One such factor that clearly correlates with health is educational attainment, and with this in mind, we are delighted to introduce the formation of the Zone 7 Scholarship Fund.
This scholarship will go directly towards undergraduate tuition for an economically disadvantaged student from Oakland, CA. Growing up in the East Bay ourselves, we have witnessed firsthand the desire among young students in our community to obtain a higher education. Unfortunately, we have also seen the disparities that exist and keep so many from achieving this. It is our aim through this scholarship fund to alleviate at least some of the economic burden that may keep an aspiring college applicant from realizing such a goal.
Nick and I certainly recognize the significant privileges we have had to reach this point in our lives, having received the education we have received. The reality is that a good portion of our audience will likely, to an extent, feel the same way about their own lives. Therefore, it is all the more important to approach this issue with empathy, realizing the economic disadvantages that may prevent someone from replicating this for themselves.
With all of that being said, we would be so grateful for any contribution our readers would be willing to make towards this fund. If you would like to donate, please see our scholarship page for more information.
Lastly, I would like to share an exciting endeavor that we are set to begin this coming weekend, in an effort to further promote the growth of this scholarship fund. Starting this Sunday morning, Nick and I will be attempting to bike from our home in the East Bay all the way to the U.S.-Mexico border in one week. This is a very ambitious goal which would require us to cover approximately 600 miles (about 90 miles/day), and we are by no means experienced in cycling. Nevertheless, we have been training to the best of our ability, and would like to see how far we can make it to support this cause.
So, to add an interesting twist to the scholarship fundraising process, you can also choose to “sponsor us” on a per-mile basis, with all proceeds going directly towards the Zone 7 Scholarship Fund. To do so, please visit our PledgeIt, which can also be accessed from our donation page.
I am truly excited about the potential of this project, and look forward to continuing it long into the future. Thank you all in advance for your generosity, and I look forward to checking back in a week from now, hopefully hundreds of miles into our trip!
